Scoring eight runs in the third inning, the Yankees hung on to post a 12-8 victory over the Tigers. The Yankee outburst began with a double by Mickey Rivers. A walk to Willie Randolph and single by Graig Nettles loaded the bases. A walk to Reggie Jackson forced in the first run and a single by Chris Chambliss drove home two more and sent Tiger starter Mark Fidrych to the showers.

Roy White doubled in one run, Jay Johnstone followed with a two-run single, a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent added another and a single by Randolph plated the final marker. [The Sporting News]
