Winning for the fifth straight time, Mike LaCoss pitched the Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Giants. The Reds tallied four of their runs on homers. In the second inning, Johnny Bench clouted a leadoff drive and, after Dan Driessen singled, Dave Collins also unloaded a round-tripper for his first in the N. L. Ray Knight added a solo swat in the fourth frame.

The shutout was the second in LaCoss' career. All three Reds' homers came off Vida Blue, who lost his third straight decision. [The Sporting News]
