Snapping their six-game losing streak, the Cubs won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-7, but then dropped the nightcap to the Mets, 4-2. The Cubs counted six runs in the first three innings of the lidlifter, including two on a homer by Barry Foote and three that were unearned as the result of an error by Richie Hebner. Steve Ontiveros then homered with a man on base in the fifth and Scot Thompson iced the decision with a run-scoring single in the eighth. Hebner and Joel Youngblood each had two RBls for the Mets.

Pat Zachry, making his first start in five weeks after coming off the disabled list, combined on a six-hitter with Skip Lockwood to give the Mets their split. With the score tied, 2-2, the Mets broke away in the fifth with a single by Lee Mazzilli, pass to Montanez, single by Steve Henderson and sacrifice fly by Ron Hodges.
