A run-scoring single by Amos Otis snapped a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning, enabling the Royals to edge the Mariners, 5-4. Pinch-hitter Steve Braun opened the Royals' eighth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Freddie Patek, who took second on a sacrifice bunt by Willie Wilson.

After George Brett was walked intentionally, Otis drilled a single for the game-winning hit. The Mariners had tied the contest in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Bruce Bochte and two-run homer by Willie Horton. [The Sporting News]
