A tight game wound up with the Padres scoring an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the 10th inning to defeat the Astros, 2-1. Fernando Gonzalez homered for the Padres in the second to put Gaylord Perry ahead in his duel with Rick Williams, but the Astros tied the score in the ninth with a pinch-double by Denny Walling, an error and an infield single by Terry Puhl.

Rollie Fingers took over for the Padres in the 10th and was the winner when Joe Sambito, pitching in relief for the Astros, beat himself. Sambito hit Gene Richards with a pitch and threw wildly on a bunt by Barry Evans, allowing Richards to reach third. Dan Briggs then hit the first pitch to him for a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Richards. [The Sporting News]
