In five-hour, 17-minute struggle, the Orioles gained their 26th victory in their last 32 games when Lee May knocked in two runs with a single in the 16th inning to defeat the Tigers, 7-5. The Orioles used five pitchers, who struck out 16 batters among them. Five hurlers for the Tigers fanned 14.

In the early going, Al Bumbry homered for one of his five hits in the game and Eddie Murray stroked a three-run double for the Orioles, who held a 5-3 lead going into the last half of the ninth when the Tigers rallied to tie the score with a homer by Steve Kemp, singles by Rusty Staub and Jason Thompson, a sacrifice by Lance Parrish and an error by Oriole reliever Don Stanhouse on a slow roller by Jerry Morales.

The deadlock persisted until the 16th when Benny Ayala singled for the Orioles with one out and Murray doubled. After an intentional pass to Gary Roenicke, May rapped his winning single. [The Sporting News]
