Dick Tidrow, obtained from the Yankees, gained credit for his first N. L. save with three innings of no-hit relief as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-1. Bob Boone homered off Cub starter Dennis Lamp for the Phillies' run in the third inning.

The Cubs, after knotting the count with the aid of an error by Greg Luzinski, broke the tie with two runs in the seventh. Jerry Martin and Mick Kelleher singled to chase Larry Christenson. Tug McGraw, in relief, walked Mike Vail to load the bases and then was tagged for run-scoring singles by Ivan DeJesus and Ted Sizemore. [The Sporting News]
