Tommy John's string of nine victories was broken when the Indians handed the Yankee lefthander his first defeat of the season, 8-4. John had not given up a homer this year until Bobby Bonds whacked his second pitch of the game over the center field wall. Gary Alexander also homered in the fourth.

The Indians chased John in the fifth when Bonds doubled, stopped at third on a single by Rick Manning and scored on a two-bagger by Andre Thornton. After Ray Burris replaced John, Manning counted on an error by Bucky Dent. Cliff Johnson hit a two-run homer for the Yankees. [The Sporting News]
