A three-run outburst in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the Dodgers to gain a 6-5 victory from the Giants. The Dodgers trailed, 5-3, when Davey Lopes drew a one-out walk off reliever Gary Lavelle and Bill Russell singled, sending Lopes to second. Lopes stole third and scored on a single by Reggie Smith.

Tom Griffin, replacing Lavelle, walked Steve Garvey to load the bases before being removed in favor of Dave Roberts. Pinch-hitter Steve Yeager then surprised the Giants by beating out a bunt to score Russell with the tying run.
