Pete Rose made his first appearance in Cincinnati since signing with Philadelphia and went hitless in four trips as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 4-2, by scoring two unearned runs in the eighth inning. The Phillies, who had been shut out in three straight games at Montreal, broke their zero string in the seventh when Del Unser and Garry Maddox hit consecutive homers to tie the score at 2-2.

Johnny Bench led off the Reds' eighth with a double and Ray Knight walked. Steve Carlton then retired the next two batters before passing Joe Morgan to load the bases. Ken Griffey followed with a grounder to Rudy Meoli and when the second baseman booted the ball, both Bench and Knight scored to hand the Reds their victory before a near-sellout crowd of 48,968 fans who turned out for Rose's "homecoming."
