Capping a four-run rally in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Lee Lacy drew a pass with the bases loaded to enable the Pirates to defeat the Padres, 9-8, for their sixth straight victory. Dave Winfield hit two homers for the Padres, who took an 8-5 lead with two runs in the ninth.

In the Pirates' half, Omar Moreno and Tim Foli singled with one out and Dave Parker lashed into a pitch by John D'Acquisto for a score-tying homer. After the second out, Bob Shirley came in for the Padres to face Willie Stargell, who rapped a single. Rollie Fingers then relieved and gave up a double by Phil Garner. After an intentional pass to Ed Ott, Lacy batted for Dale Berra and drew the walk that gave the victory to the Pirates and ended the Padres' five-game winning streak. [The Sporting News]
