The Phillies snapped their six-game losing streak by winning the opener of a doubleheader, 6-4, but the Reds came back to take the nightcap, 12-2. With the score tied, 4-4, in the ninth inning, Phils' pinch-hitter Greg Gross led off with a double and scored one out later on a single by Bud Harrelson. A double by Pete Rose moved Harrelson to third and after an intentional walk, Mike Schmidt lofted a sacrifice fly to provide an insurance marker.

In the second game, George Foster paced the Reds' 18-hit attack with two homers, driving in four runs. The Reds bunched four hits for three runs in the second inning and added three more in the third, two coming on consecutive homers by Foster and Dan Driessen. The Reds erupted for four tallies in the seventh stanza, three scoring on Foster's second homer of the game and his third of the day. [The Sporting News]
