A seven-run sixth inning carried the Yankees to an 8-3 thumping of the Royals as Tommy John became the majors' first 10-game winner. In the Yank sixth, Graig Nettles doubled and scored on a double by Chris Chambliss. Roy White walked and Jim Spencer stroked an RBI single.

After Mickey Rivers received an intentional walk to load the sacks, Willie Randolph tripled to center and subsequently scored on a wild pitch. After Thurman Munson walked, Steve Mingori replaced Rich Gale on the mound for the Royals and yielded a single to Nettles and an RBI single to Lou Piniella. [The Sporting News]
