The Red Sox trundled up their heavy artillery and bombarded the Rangers, 13-5, as Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski each homered and knocked in three runs apiece and Rick Burleson clouted his first career grand slam. The Sox picked up three runs in their first turn at bat on RBI doubles by Rice and Carlton Fisk sandwiched around a run-scoring infield out by Yastrzemski.

They added a pair in the third on an RBI triple by Rice and sacrifice fly by Yastrzemski and exploded for eight runs in the fifth frame. Rice and Yaz led off the fifth with consecutive homers, Butch Hobson smacked an RBI triple and after three straight walks, Burleson unloaded his round-tripper into the left field screen.
