A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Mike Vail in the eighth inning gave the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Fernando Gonzalez and Dave Winfield homered for the Padres. With the score tied in the eighth, Barry Foote hit his second double of the game for the Cubs.

Sam Mejias ran for Foote and advanced to third on a bunt by Steve Dillard before Vail batted for Ivan DeJesus and drilled a deep fly to center field. Lynn McGlothen was the winner in relief of Ken Holtzman. Bruce Sutter pitched the ninth inning and gained credit for his 12th save. [The Sporting News]
