Hitting the first grand-slam homer of his major league career, Dan Ford powered the Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Tigers. With the Angels leading, 2-1, Bobby Grich was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and stopped at second on a single by Willie Davis, who had four hits in the game. Following a sacrifice bunt by Bert Campaneris, the Tigers walked Carney Lansford intentionally in a move that backfired.

John Hiller replaced Milt Wilcox on the mound for the Tigers and Ford greeted the reliever with his jackpot wallop. The Tigers came back with three runs in the ninth before the rally ended. [The Sporting News]
