With two out in the eighth inning, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk rapped consecutive singles to produce the run that gave the Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Twins. The Red Sox scored their initial run in the fifth when Yastrzemski doubled aand Butch Hobson singled. Yaz' two-bagger represented his 996th career extra-base hit, putting him 15th on the major leagues' all-time list ahead of Al Simmons.

The Twins tied the score in the eighth with a single by Butch Wynegar, a passed ball and a single by Ken Landreaux that scored pinch-runner Dave Edwards. Bob Stanley then relieved Steve Renko on the mound for the Red Sox and gained credit for the victory, retiring the Twins' last four batters on only 12 pitches. [The Sporting News]
