A wild pickoff throw by Darold Knowles for his second error in the 10th inning allowed Bill Almon to score from second base with the run that gave the Padres an 8-7 victory over the Cardinals. Dave Winfield tripled with the bases loaded and Dan Briggs homered to pace the Padres to a 7-4 lead. The Cardinals, who had a homer by Ken Reitz, rallied to tie the score in the ninth before Knowles threw the game away in the 10th.

Barry Evans led off the inning with a single for the Padres and Almon was safe when Knowles mishandled his sacrifice bunt. Fernando Gonzalez forced Evans at third. Knowles then tried to pick off Gonzalez at first, but there was a mixup in signs and first baseman Keith Hernandez was not covering the bag.
