A wild pickoff throw by Darold Knowles for his second error in the 10th inning allowed Bill Almon to score from second base with the run that gave the Padres an 8-7 victory over the Cardinals. Dave Winfield tripled with the bases loaded and Dan Briggs homered to pace the Padres to a 7-4 lead. The Cardinals, who had a homer by Ken Reitz, rallied to tie the score in the ninth before Knowles threw the game away in the 10th.
