Scoring four runs on just one hit in the top of the 10th inning, the Red Sox prevailed over the Royals, 4-0. The Sox rally began with walks to Carlton Fisk and Butch Hobson that brought on Marty Pattin in relief of starter Steve Busby. Dwight Evans greeted Pattin with a double that scored Fisk.

Al Hrabosky came on to issue an intentional walk to George Scott to load the bases. Jerry Remy dropped a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate that Hrabosky fielded and threw wildly past catcher Darrell Porter, allowing two runs to come across and Scott to reach third, from where he tallied the final run of the inning on a groundout by Rick Burleson.
