After building a 9-1 lead, the Dodgers barely staved off a ninth-inning Cardinal uprising to come away with a 9-8 victory. Davey Lopes extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a leadoff homer in the first inning and also had a two-run single in the second frame. Winning pitcher Rick Sutcliffe helped his own cause with a two-run single in the third and Ron Cey led off the fourth with a round-tripper.

The Cards rallied for seven runs in the ninth, the big blow being a grand-slam homer by Tony Scott. The Redbirds had two men on when reliever Terry Forster struck out Lou Brock for the game's final out. [The Sporting News]
