Joe Rudi, who had not played since June 3, came up as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and delivered a single for the Angels' deciding run in a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. Brian Downing batted in the Angels' first two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the third, but Jason Thompson hit two homers for the Tigers to tie score.

In the Angels' eighth, Willie Aikens singled and Downing walked before Tiger starter Jack Morris was lifted in favor of John Hiller. Rudi batted for Larry Harlow and rapped Hiller's first pitch for his single to snap the tie. After a passed ball and a walk to Bobby Grich, Tom Donohue singled to give the Angels an insurance run.
