Ken Holtzman and Bruce Sutter combined on a four-hitter and Dave Kingman batted in two runs with a double and a homer as the Cubs defeated the Padres, 5-2. Holtzman, who had a bit of control trouble, gave up the Padres' runs in the first inning.

The Cubs wiped out their deficit in the third with three runs on passes to Ivan DeJesus and Mick Kelleher, a double by Kingman, infield out by Scot Thompson and single by Jerry Martin. Kingman hit his homer, No. 22 for the Cubs' slugger, in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
