Exploding for six runs after two were out in the first inning, the Cubs built up an early lead and then added two runs on a single by Mick Kelleher in the eighth to defeat the Padres, 8-5. Bill Buckner ignited the Cubs' outburst with a double and Dave Kingman homered. A triple by Jerry Martin, infield hit by Mike Vail and double by Barry Foote kayoed Bob Owchinko.

After Bob Shirley relieved, an intentional pass to Ted Sizemore loaded the bases. Mike Krukow helped himself to victory, driving in two runs with a double, and a third scored when Jerry Turner threw wild after retrieving the ball in left field. [The Sporting News]
