Ed Whitson and Kent Tekulve combined on a two-hitter and Tim Foli batted in three runs as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 5-1. Bill Russell homered for the Dodgers' run in the fourth inning and added a single for their other hit in the sixth.

The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Manny Sanguillen and Matt Alexander singled and Tim Foli drove them across with a double. Foil accounted for his third RBI of the game with a single in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
