Willie McCovey turned from homer slugger to singles hitter against the Cardinals, driving in two runs and scoring one, to help the Giants gain a 7-4 victory. The Cardinals, who lost their fifth straight game, tied the score at 4-4 before the Giants broke away with three runs in the eighth inning.

Johnnie LeMaster led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Marc Hill and counted on a pinch-single by Bill Madlock. The Giants went on to load the bases and McCovey singled, driving in two insurance runs. [The Sporting News]
