The Cardinals suffered their 13th straight setback at San Diego Stadium and sixth in row in their current slump as Randy Jones and Rollie Fingers combined to throttle the Redbirds, 3-2. The Padres broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth inning on an unearned run.

After Jerry Turner singled, Gene Tenace flied out, but Cards' center fielder Tony Scott threw wildly to enable Turner to race to third. Jay Johnstone plated the tie-breaking run with a groundout. An error by Mike Tyson on a foul fly gave Tenace extra life in the sixth and the Padre catcher followed with a sacrifice fly for what proved to be the decisive run. [The Sporting News]
