Manager Billy Martin emptied his bullpen to quell a ninth-inning Indian uprising in a 3-2 Yankees' victory. A sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers scored Bobby Brown in the third and a walk to Graig Nettles, double by Lou Piniella and triple by Darryl Jones plated two in the eighth to give the Yankees a 3-0 margin.

Singles by Toby Harrah, Andre Thornton and Mike Hargrove scored one run before Don Hood replaced Ron Davis on the hill. Rick Manning promptly singled to score Thornton and bring on Ray Burris to face Cliff Johnson, who walked on 12 pitches to load the bases. Ken Clay replaced Burris and his first offering to Duane Kuiper resulted in a game-ending double play that preserved Catfish Hunter's first victory of the season. [The Sporting News]
