Walks and mental mistakes doomed the White Sox as the Twins needed only three of their six hits to score all their runs in a 5-3 victory. The first run came in the second inning when Ron Jackson, who had singled, scored from second after an infield bouncer by Hosken Powell took a bad hop off first baseman Lamar Johnson. The runner missed the plate but came back to touch it while catcher Bill Nahorodny showed the umpire that he had held the ball.

Jackson's three-run homer in the following frame followed passes to Bob Randall and Roy Smalley. In the fifth, Bombo Rivera walked, moved to second on a walk to Smalley, took third on a fly ball, and scored when Smalley was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal with two outs.
