Rookie lefthander Phil Nastu weathered solo homers by George Foster and Dan Driessen to pitch the Giants to a 3-2 defeat of the Reds. The Giants scored twice in the first. Jack Clark's double sent Terry Whitfield, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to third and left first base open for an intentional pass to Willie McCovey. Bill Madlock then singled home a pair.

Whitfield's double scored Bill North in the ninth for what looked like an insurance run. It proved to be the winning run when Driessen homered in the home half. Ray Knight and pinch-hitter Junior Kennedy singled and moved up on a passed ball before Tom Griffin snuffed the Reds' hopes by retiring Johnny Bench on a foul pop to McCovey. [The Sporting News]
