After falling behind, 5-0, the Yankees rallied for three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth, on a double by Mickey Rivers and two-out homer by Graig Nettles, to send the game into extra innings before prevailing in the 10th on a ground-rule double by Bucky Dent, 6-5.

Tommy John's road to becoming the league's first 11-game winner was threatened by the Tribe's big fourth inning, but the Yanks started their rebound in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Darryl Jones and a two-run double to right by Rivers.
