The sizzling Orioles thrilled a home crowd of 45,814 by sweeping a twinbill from the Tigers, 8-6 and 6-5, to extend their winning streak to nine games. In the opener, the Birds finally overcame a 6-1 deficit on a homer by Eddie Murray in the ninth after John Hiller had walked Al Bumbry and Ken Singleton. Tippy Martinez notched his fifth relief win, blanking the Tigers through the final four frames without a hit.

The nightcap triumph also came on late-inning lightning. Ken Singleton tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run single in the seventh, and the winning run scored when John Lowenstein reached on an error by Dave Machemer in the eighth, advanced to second on a walk to Rich Dauer and scored on a two-out single by pinch-hitter Terry Crowley.
