The Reds snapped the Astros' six-game winning streak by taking the first game of a doubleheader, 2-1, but the Astros came back to win the second game, 4-0. In the opener, Tom Seaver and two relievers combined on a three-hitter. Th eReds scored both their runs in the first inning. Ken Griffey drew a two-out walk and George Foster followed with a long homer into the second tier of the left field seats.

In the nightcap, Randy Niemann hurled a six-hitter and the Astros scored all their runs in the seventh stanza. A single by Craig Reynolds and a walk to Cesar Cedeno began the uprising and brought on Dave Tomlin in relief of starter Mike LaCoss. A double by Jose Cruz drove in the first run.
