Dividing a twin bill, the Pirates captured the first game, 8-1, and the Mets took the second, 4-0. In the opener, John Candelaria tossed a five-hitter, retiring 16 of the first 17 batters he faced. The Pirates broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Rennie Stennett. Two other runs came across on a wild pitch and a hit batsman with the bases loaded.

In the nightcap, Pete Falcone won his first game this season, pitching his first shutout and complete game in two years. The Mets jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame, unloading six straight hits. Lee Mazzilli belted a homer for two runs and a single by Steve Henderson produced another pair. [The Sporting News]
