The Red Sox scored two runs in the ninth inning to take a 3-1 decision from the Tigers. Jim Rice opened the rally with a double, Bob Watson walked and, after one out, Butch Hobson drilled a double to plate Rice, breaking a 1-1 tie. Following a 43-minute rain delay, Tom Poquette gave the Sox an insurance run with a sacrifice fly as the Bosox won for the sixth time in the last seven games. [The Sporting News]
