A two-out single in the eighth inning by Duffy Dyer spoiled Silvio Martinez' bid for a no-hitter as the Cards whitewashed the Expos, 5-0. The only other baserunner against Martinez was Andre Dawson, who reached first base on an error by Lou Brock in the opening inning.

The Cards scored in the first inning when Garry Templeton singled, stole second and scored on a single by Dane Iorg. The Redbirds added three runs in the second after loading the bases on singles by Ken Oberkfell, Mike Phillips and Templeton.
