Erupting for five runs in the ninth inning, the Mets defeated the Pirates, 12-9. Willie Montanez and Steve Henderson began the Mets' rally with consecutive homers to tie the score at 9-9. Doug Flynn followed with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice and, after Joel Youngblood received an intentional walk, scored on a single by Elliott Maddox.
