Rick Burleson doubled in the 13th inning and scored on a single by Jerry Remy to bring the Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. After seven innings of scoreless pitching in a duel between Mike Torrez and Ron Guidry, the Red Sox scored a run in the eighth on singles by Bob Montgomery, Burleson and Larry Wolfe. Ron Davis replaced Guidry in the ninth and was tagged for a homer by Jim Rice, but the Yankees rallied to tie the score in their half.

Bobby Murcer, playing in Yankee Stadium for the first time since September 30, 1973, singled and Lou Piniella was safe on an error by Butch Hobson. One out later, Graig Nettles singled to drive in Murcer. Piniella took third and, after Bill Campbell replaced Torrez, scored the tying run on an infield out by Jim Spencer, sending the game into overtime. [The Sporting News]
