The slugging of Greg Luzinski, who drove in four runs with four hits and also scored twice, enabled the Phillies to win the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-7, but the Cardinals came back to gain a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Luzinski batted in two runs with a single in the first inning of the lidlifter and doubled and scored in the third. Mike Schmidt hit a homer in the fourth to give the Phillies a 5-2 lead, but the Cardinals rallied for five runs in their half, three coming on a bases-loaded double by Ken Oberkfell. Luzinski tied the score with a two-run triple in the sixth and scored the Phillies' deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Garry Maddox.

In the second game, Tony Scott and Keith Hernandez each batted in two runs to lead the Cardinals' attack, providing a split. [The Sporting News]
