The seven-hit pitching of Scott McGregor in the first game and a four-hitter by Steve Stone, who needed help from Don Stanhouse for the last out in the second game, carried the Orioles to 6-1 and 4-0 victories in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Blue Jays. Otto Velez homered in the second inning of the lidlifter for the Blue Jays' only run. The Orioles, beating Dave Stieb in his major league debut, scored three runs in their half of the second on a bases-loaded single by Rich Dauer and an error by Bob Davis before adding three more in the sixth on a pass to Ken Singleton followed by back-to-back homers by Doug DeCinces and Lee May. In the nightcap, the Orioles continued their slugging with round-trippers by Pat Kelly and John Lowenstein. Stanhouse replaced Stone after the Blue Jays loaded the bases with two out in the ninth and retired Al Woods to end the game. [The Sporting News] |
