The fourth single of the game by Bob Watson drove home the winning run in the eighth inning as the Red Sox edged the Royals, 5-4. Jim Rice drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Tom Poquette before Watson delivered the deciding blow. The Royals had a 4-0 lead, but Butch Hobson drove in a run with a double in the second, Rice homered in the fifth and Rick Burleson tied the score with a two-run single in the seventh.
