John Fulgham hurled his first major league shutout as the Cardinals topped the Pirates, 2-0. The Redbirds scored both runs in the first inning. Lou Brock singled and scored on a double by Keith Hernandez, who then tallied on a single by George Hendrick. Hendrick made a game-saving catch in the top of the ninth when he leaped high off the fence to snare a line drive off the bat of pinch-hitter John Milner with runners on second and third and two out.
