After winning the first game, 4-3, on a pass with the bases loaded, the Yankees completed their sweep of a twi-night doubleheader when Tommy John shut out the A's, 3-0, for his 13th victory. The Yankees had a two-run homer by Thurman Munson in the opener but were tied, 3-3, going into the eighth inning when a single by Graig Nettles, double by Chris Chambliss and intentional pass to Jim Spencer loaded the bases. Mike Norris, replacing Steve McCatty on the mound for the A's, struck out Bucky Dent but then passed Willie Randolph to force in the Yankees' deciding run. Ron Davis was winner in relief, boosting his record to 8-0.

In the nightcap, the Yankees scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Randolph, Munson and Lou Piniella singled for the first tally. Reggie Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to deliver the second run and, after an infield hit by Darryl Jones, Chambliss doubled for the final marker. [The Sporting News]
