George Foster, who was out of the Reds' lineup because of a pulled muscle, came off the bench as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning and delivered a run-scoring single to defeat the Pirates, 2-1. Joe Morgan homered for the Reds' initial run in the seventh. The Pirates tied the score with singles by Phil Garner and John Milner and an infield out by Tim Foli in the eighth.

In the ninth, Morgan walked, Johnny Bench sacrificed and Dan Driessen was given an intentional pass. After Ray Knight forced Morgan at third, Foster batted for Paul Blair and hit his winning single. [The Sporting News]
