Dave Winfield hit a homer in the 12th inning to give the Padres a 6-5 victory over the Mets. Triples by Joel Youngblood, Frank Taveras and Steve Henderson helped the Mets take a 4-0 lead in the first two innings before the Padres scored twice in the fourth on a single by Paul Dade and a homer by Gene Tenace.

The Padres gained the lead with three runs in the eighth, scoring their go-ahead tally on a pass to Gene Richards with the bases loaded. Lee Mazzilli then knotted the count with a homer in the Mets' half of the eighth. [The Sporting News]
