Mike Schmidt became the first slugger in major league history to hit four consecutive homers for the second time in his career, but the Phillies lost to the Giants, 8-6. Schmidt, who homered in his last at-bat in the previous night's game, followed with successive clouts in the second, third and sixth innings. The Phillies' third baseman had previously hit four homers in a row against the Cubs April 17, 1976.

After Schmidt's smash in the second inning, Garry Maddox also hit for the circuit. Schmidt's homer in the third followed passes to Larry Bowa and Pete Rose. His round-tripper in the sixth accounted for his fifth RBI of the game. [The Sporting News]
