The Reds won the opener of a doubleheader, 4-2, before the Pirates came back to capture the nightcap, 2-1, In the first game, a three-run homer by Dan Driessen lifted the Reds to victory. Driessen's circuit clout came in the fourth inning after a double by Junior Kennedy and infield single by Johnny Bench.

In the second game, the score was 1-1 going into the ninth inning when Willie Stargell cracked a round-tripper with one out to give the Bucs their triumph. [The Sporting News]
