With rookie Dickie Noles gaining credit for his first major league victory and Mike Schmidt continuing his torrid slugging, the Phillies gained a 4-2 decision over the Giants. Schmidt, with six homers in his last 12 at-bats, slammed his 29th round-tripper of the season after a single by Pete Rose in the seventh inning. The third sacker also batted in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a groundout after walks to Bake McBride and Pete Rose and a single by Larry Bowa loaded the bases. [The Sporting News]
