Completing the three-game series sweep, the Indians built an 8-0 early lead and then hung on to edge the slumping Royals, 9-8. Six of the Indians' first seven runs, all off Paul Splittorff, were unearned.

After Bobby Bonds crashed a three-run homer off reliever Marty Pattin in the sixth inning to make it 8-0, the Royals came back with six runs, all after a two-out error by Tom Veryzer in the seventh, two scoring on a double by George Brett and two on a homer by Amos Otis.
