The Mariners enjoyed a 16-1 romp over the Yankees as Floyd Bannister pitched a three-hitter. The Mariners knocked out Tommy John and scored nine runs in the first inning, the key blows being a two-run triple by Mario Mendoza and two-run homer by Ruppert Jones.

Bruce Bochte clouted a two-run round-tripper in the third and the Mariners completed the rout with five runs in the seventh highlighted by a two-run homer by Leon Roberts and two-run single by Tom Paciorek. The victory was the fifth straight for the Mariners over the Yankees in Seattle this year and 13th in 16 games over three seasons. [The Sporting News]
