After blowing a 4-0 lead, the Red Sox came from behind with three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the A's, 8-7. Butch Hobson hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox in the fourth. The A's rallied to tie the score at 5-5 and then took the lead when Tony Armas homered with a man on base in the eighth.

Pinch-hitter Larry Wolfe sparked the Red Sox in the ninth with a double and scored on singles by Jim Dwyer and Jim Rice. Carl Yastrzemski followed with a single to drive in the tying run. Rice took third on the hit. After an intentional pass to Bob Watson, Carlton Fisk hit a sacrifice fly to provide the winning run. [The Sporting News]
